The 1st regional workshop on sharing economy in the Calabria region

On 28 September, in the Press Room of the Congress Centre of the University of Calabria, an entire afternoon was dedicated to the workshop "From digital platforms to social enterprises: business models for sharing economy" with the contribution of regional and national operators, entrepreneurs and innovators.

The meeting was organized by SPIN for the European project SharEEN (www.shareen.eu) in collaboration with Goodwill and Talent Garden Cosenza, with the aim of better understanding the needs of the initiatives already active in the region, extend and verify the first mapping made by the project and stimulate further for insights and collaborations.

After a brief presentation of the SharEEN project by SPIN and an introduction on the collaborative economy of Goodwill's youth workers, Marta Mainieri  (www.collaboriamo.org slide Collaboriamo.org) focused on the peculiarities of the model and on the criticality of designing a collaborative platform. The design, unlike other initiatives, is necessarily focused on "building a community" along five dimensions: the need of the community, the "choice" of users, the ways of exchange, confidence-building, the members of the community.

Afterwards, many other contributions enriched the discussion and the SharEEN regional map created by SPIN with about twenty experiences that are born "from digital" and from more "social"/territorial matrices. Samuele Furfaro (www.macingo.com , slideMacingo) presented Macingo, a growing Italian community for sharing transport of bulky goods. Stefano Caccavari told about the experience of Orto in Famiglia and Mulinum to promote a territory with an agricultural vocation. Theme also taken up by Pietro Molinaro, president of Colidretti Calabria. Very interesting also the experience of Albergo Diffuso in Belmonte in the recovery of abandoned houses in terms of community tourism and two other initiatives in the start-up phase, namely Sensappzionale for proximity tourism and Otakube for a common space for fans of cosplay and comics.

In the second part of the meeting, Luca Tesauro (Giffoni Innovation Hub), Raffaele Vitulli (Matera Hub), Demetrio Naccari (Prepare4Change) and Gennaro Di Cello (Entopan) reasoned about the role of hubs to facilitate the development of talents, multiply opportunities and overcome the "risk of dwarfism”  working on the construction of "networks of networks".

In conclusion, in addition to enriching the map of collaborative economy initiatives, the workshop helped to identify some critical areas such as, in particular: the difficulty of focusing on the "need of the community", the lack of experienced figures on technologies and marketing for the sharing economy, confidence building: from the issue of transparency in the use of data, to the security of transactions, eg. the role of hubs in building networks (and networks of networks) and facilitating the development of talent (how to support and interconnect hubs).

Further contributions on needs, obstacles and ideas for new initiatives can be collected through the online consultation of the SharEEN project consultation

Finally, the participation of the SharEEN project in Sharing Islands 2018 (Tenerife, 28 November - 1 December 2018, fourth edition of the European Forum) was also illustrated.

SharEEN is an European pilot project on “Opportunities for European Entrepreneurs in the Sharing Economy”, co-funded by the European Commission under the Call: 251-G-GRO-PPA-16-9953. Grant agreement SI2.763745. The objective of SharEEN is to identify and link-up with collaborative economy platforms, exchange experience with all relevant stakeholders and help European SMEs, social enterprises and other relevant actors to exploit the opportunities offered by the sharing economy.  In particular, the project aims at building knowledge and capacity among Enterprise Europe Network partners’ staff and other stakeholders on sharing economy, and help them define and deploy supporting services for their SMEs.

SharEEN map of regional sharing economy initiatives

The map is based on the results of the surveying activity carried out by the SharEEN project in 2018. It includes a brief geo-referenced description of a set of sharing economy initiatives, platforms and companies, operating in the eight European regions covered by the project.
